Get involved. Stay engaged.
Research has shown that patients who take an active role in their care and are concerned about both short- and long-term health outcomes are more likely to recognize symptoms early on, which speeds up diagnosis, and lower costs.
And as digital interactions proliferate, providers feel a demand to make patient information more accessible to consumers who now want to be able to control their healthcare through technology.
But the vast majority of healthcare professionals claim that they still lack the time necessary for effective patient involvement and communication.
This has created a gap in care for patients and where patient engagement tools come in.
Activities including motivational interviewing, surveys, focus groups, storytelling, advisory councils, board involvement, patients serving as improvement advisers, and co-designing solutions with patients, are all part of patient engagement. Digital solutions that facilitate this work and communication between providers and patients, make up the digital patient engagement market. This market is estimated to be worth USD 16.1 billion in 2021 and expected to soar to USD 41.0 Billion by 2028.
Given the benefits of patient engagement, it has become a top priority in the research agendas of the FDA and EMA. Already, there have been 21 studies reporting on 23 tools measuring the effectiveness in engagement tools on patients, the public, consumers, and communities.
Experts believe digital engagement tools can help bridge gaps in care. But they also warn innovators to disband historic assumptions when building and include informal caregivers in their strategies.
