Globally, only 40% of children under 6 months are exclusively breastfed and that number is continuing to decline. And in the U.S. ~23% of babies are exclusively breastfed, despite recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
The fact is breastfeeding is not talked about enough, from its challenges to its benefits. What's more, how those who breastfeed get support has shifted dramatically over the years. These days, information is heavily sought in non-traditional medical settings - most notably social media. In order to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding, providers are challenged to extend themselves to reach those who want to breastfeed and those who support them in their journey via social media and technology.
With several studies showing telehealth support and discussion forums as effective tools for individuals living in remote areas, the question becomes how else can digital care support breastfeeding individuals?
There are opportunities for health tech companies to develop supporting tools for lactation consultants, caregivers, and breastfeeding parent themselves. However, apps on the market today mostly focus on mealtime and baby weight tracking. We predict an expansion in this category, given the recent focus on women's health, but only time will tell...
