The yearly cost of all food consumed worldwide is $9 trillion, while the associated costs to the economy, environment, and human health exceeds $19.8 trillion.
Over $11 trillion of those expenses are directly attributable to the effects of poor diets on human health. In the US, poor nutrition is a major contributor to illnesses like diabetes and heart disease, which claim 600,000 lives annually.
With the goal of enhancing health, the area of precision nutrition is still in its infancy. It aims to better match dietary advice and nutritional standards to the needs and circumstances of various people.
Digital nutrition apps and wearables look to take full advantage of the precision nutrition discipline but can also serve larger public health goals.
For elders and people with mobility issues, having access to food via digital means may greatly boost total food access. In particular, delivery zones can help bridge the access hurdles that are prevalent in many underdeveloped locations - aka food deserts.
To support initiatives that boost food and nutrition security, Kaiser Permanente has pledged $50 million. The $50 million pledge from Kaiser Permanente will go toward supporting a number of projects, including developing e-commerce alternatives to enhance the number of nutritious products that may be purchased with SNAP and WIC benefits.
In order to find ways to reduce hunger and increase health fairness, there needs to be more public-private partnership supported by the donations like these.
